Common questions
How do I know if I have termites?
The common signs: mud tubes on foundations, hollow-sounding or blistering timber, bubbling paint, tightening doors, and flying swarmers around lights in the warmer months. If you spot any of these, don't disturb the area — call for an inspection, because scattered termites simply move somewhere you can't see.
How often should a Melbourne property be inspected for termites?
Australian Standard AS 3660.2 recommends at least annual inspections — more often for high-risk properties. Melbourne's suburbs carry real subterranean termite pressure, and an annual inspection costs a fraction of the repairs it prevents.
What does termite treatment involve?
It depends on what the inspection finds: chemical soil treatments create a treated zone that eliminates the colony through the workers crossing it; baiting systems intercept and kill the colony where soil treatment doesn't suit the structure. Both are professional-only — retail sprays make termite problems worse by scattering the colony.
I found termites — should I spray them?
No. Spraying visible termites kills a handful of workers and warns the colony, which withdraws and re-attacks somewhere hidden. Leave the area undisturbed and book an inspection — treating the colony, not the individuals, is the whole game.
Are termites covered by home insurance?
Almost never — most Australian policies exclude termite damage, which is exactly why the Standard recommends regular inspections. Prevention and early detection are effectively your only cover.
